There is no doubt that dogs truly are humans’ loyal and beloved companions. They enhance our lives in countless ways, and people worldwide cherish their presence in different ways. For example, in Nepal, they commemorate the exceptional relationship we have with our furry friends by holding an annual festival in their honor.

The festival, known as Kukur Tihar or Kukur Puja, is held in Nepal to honor and thank dogs for their loyalty and friendship. This celebration, also called the Day of the Dogs, takes place during the Hindu festival of lights, which occurs in October to November and is known as “Diwali” or “biwali”. During this time, Hindus celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance, and it is associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. The Diwali also marks the fiscal new year in India.

During the festival, dogs receive a “Tika,” a red mark on their forehead as a blessing. They are adorned with flower garlands and offered food as part of the celebration.
Hindus believe that dogs are messengers of Yamaraj, the God of death, and by keeping them happy, they can appease Yamaraj.

All dogs, including both pets and stray dogs, are celebrated and revered at the special festival. They are treated with utmost respect and fed nutritious food including meat, eggs, milk, and good quality dog food.
This festival takes place during a beautiful time of year in Nepal, when the city is illuminated with lights and people clean their houses and courtyards. As part of the Hindu tradition, they also pray to Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth, in hopes of receiving her blessings upon their homes.

In the photographs, the animals appear to be very happy and content with being the focus of attention. However, we believe that every day should be a celebration of the special bond we share with our canine companions.

Please share this with your family and friends.
